Barcelona have been fined 602 euros by the Spanish football federation over the way they went after Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez.
The case goes back to the spring. Barcelona wanted a new forward, Alvarez was a name they liked, and Atletico did not like how the first contact was made. So Atletico complained, and now there is a ruling.
What Atletico complained about
Atletico said Barcelona talked to the player’s camp before they told Atletico they wanted him. Alvarez was under contract in Madrid at the time, and under the rules his club should hear about it first.
The federation found that Alvarez’s agent and Barcelona sporting director Deco spoke on 15 May. Barcelona’s first letter to Atletico came 13 days later, on 28 May. That gap is what the case was about.
A minor breach
The federation called it a minor breach of the rules. The 602 euros is reported to be the most it could give for this kind of breach, so Barcelona got the top of a very small scale.
Atletico had also taken the case to FIFA. FIFA said it was not their case to decide, which left it with the Spanish federation. Barcelona are reported to be planning an appeal, even though the amount is tiny.
Alvarez stayed in Madrid
In the summer, Atletico refused to sell Alvarez, and he stayed at the club. The noise around him has not hurt his form. Last weekend he scored Atletico’s winner against Deportivo.
Our take
602 euros is pocket money for a club like Barcelona, and the fine itself will hurt nobody. For Atletico it is more about being proved right. The federation agreed that Barcelona broke the rules, and that was what Atletico wanted from the start.
The appeal is the strange part. Barcelona would spend more on lawyers than on the fine, so it looks like they care about the ruling more than the money. Other clubs will watch this too. Talking to an agent first and the club second can now bring an official ruling against you, even if the bill is small.
Is 602 euros a fair punishment, or should the federation be able to give bigger fines in cases like this? Tell us in the comments.
