Harry Kane signs a new Bayern Munich contract until 2029 after winning the Ballon d’Or

Harry Kane is staying at Bayern Munich. The club announced on Thursday that the England captain has signed a new contract that runs until the summer of 2029.

The news comes only days after Kane won the Ballon d’Or. He is 33, and he now has a deal that could keep him in Munich until he is close to 36.

“I was keen to stay”

Kane spoke about the decision in the club statement. “I feel right at home at FC Bayern,” he said. “I love the club, the fans and the city of Munich.”

He said he was keen to stay, and added that he is looking forward to the future and wants to win many more titles with the club.

Sporting director Christoph Freund said Bayern were “absolutely delighted” to keep him.

The club did not give any figures. Reports say the new deal puts Kane among the best-paid players in Europe.

The numbers since 2023

Kane joined Bayern from Tottenham in the summer of 2023. Since then he has scored 156 goals in 161 games.

He has finished as the top scorer in the Bundesliga in every season he has played in Germany, and he has won the European Golden Shoe twice. With Bayern he has won two Bundesliga titles, one German Cup and two German Super Cups.

Last season was his best yet. He scored 61 goals for Bayern and 73 for club and country, and Bayern won the league and cup double.

He is also the first English player to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001. Last month he won his 125th England cap, which put him level with Peter Shilton’s record.

What it means for Bayern

For years people asked if Kane would one day go back to the Premier League. This contract makes that very unlikely for now.

Bayern are top of the Bundesliga again this season, ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference. The one big trophy Kane has still never won is the Champions League.

Our take

This is good business for both sides. Bayern keep the best striker in Europe at a time when they are winning again, and Kane gets to stay at a club where he scores almost every week.

His age is the only question. A long deal for a striker in his thirties can be a risk. But Kane has never relied on pace, and his finishing and passing should last longer than most.

Bayern now have the rest of this season and two more after it to chase the one big prize Kane is missing.
